Our campaign to represent District 4 on the City Council has come under attack by out-of-town corporate interests, who have begun pouring dark money into the race. A Sacramento-based PAC funded by the Los Angeles Police Protective League, corporate landlords, and the for-profit insurance industry (source: CA Sec. of State) has put out a ridiculous mailer, texts, and digital ads trying to blame me for crime in Berkeley.
Let me be clear. I am proud of the work we have done in Berkeley to expand civilian response to mental health and homelessness crises, non-police enforcement of low level traffic and driving offenses, and institute progressive police oversight through an improved use of force policy and empowered Police Accountability Board. These policies make our community safer. If the LAPD, who just brutalized non-violent student protestors at UCLA, want to attack me over these common sense views, I welcome their scorn.
These outside forces don’t care about the safety, affordability, or health of our community. This election cycle, the Los Angeles Police Protective League has spent tens of thousands of dollars supporting Republican candidates across the state. These corporate interest groups are pouring money into this race to attack me because my priority is not their bottom line; it’s the needs of District 4 residents.
